The Race

Nestled in the wooded areas just south of Newaygo, about 40 minutes north of Grand Rapids, Hess Lake offers a very unique and scenic running experience that athletes crave. Far from the “same old” streets and suburbia that runners are accustomed to, the race course challenges even the most avid runners yet offers scenery that beginners can appreciate.

All courses touch the lakeshore drives of Hess Lake. The 5K covers about 1/3 of the lakeshore, the 10K runs once around the lake, and the half marathon does a second loop around the lake. Veteran runners love the course for its uniqueness and challenging hills. Beginners love the course for its scenery and many “unplanned” water stops manned by lakeshore residents who participate on their own.

2020 Race Update

To our runners, sponsors, and supporters:

Every July, we look forward to the Hess Lake Run for A-T. The support for our growing race, and the support for the A-T Children’s Project, has been nothing short of amazing. We cannot thank you enough for that. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected every aspect of our lives. From interactions with friends and family, to sporting events, to even our charity events. It is with our deepest regret that we are cancelling the 2020 Hess Lake Run. This decision did not come lightly. After much discussion, we felt it was the safest decision.

The safety and well being of our runners and volunteers has, and will always be, our first priority. We simply cannot take the risk of an event with hundreds of participants in such close proximity to each other, when so much is still unknown about this disease. We also took into account our sponsors. Businesses are fighting to stay alive, and asking for their donations and services at this time would be irresponsible. We will be providing links to the businesses who were already onboard for the 2020 event, in hopes you will support them at this time.

Finally, the search for a cure for A-T does not stop with the cancellation of our race. Children affected by A-T are even more susceptible to COVID-19 due to their weakened immune systems. You can help these children during this times, by visiting the A-T Children’s Project website at:

We thank you for your understanding with this announcement. Please contact us with any questions, concerns, or how you can get involved with the A-T Children’s Project. We wish everyone good health and safety during this time, and we look forward to seeing you all at the 2021 Hess Lake Run for A-T.

Sincerely yours,
The Hess Lake Run Committee
